Tae Kwon Do means "art of hand and foot fighting". It is a martial art that has no equal in either power or technique. Tae Kwon Do stresses the importance of harmony and balance between the mental and physical. By doing this, one can have a stable and balanced system. Then one can learn how the mind and body become the weapons of Tae Kwon Do.
Tae Kwon Do is an action philosophy, the Korean art of self-defense. Literally translated, it means "foot-hand-art". However, there is much more to Tae Kwon Do than kicking and punching. It is designed as a non-violent art system of entire body practice and a way of life. It includes physical and mental discipline with a deep philosophy.
Through practicing Tae Kwon Do, all practitioners can benefit physically, by developing good coordination and a strong body; mentally, by building self-confidence, gaining good judgement and developing a sound mind; and philosophically, by learning to respect others, to help others, to be honest, and to always stand by the weak. Therefore, it is a guide for the formation of outstanding character, a modern world sport, and philosophy. Not only is Tae Kwon Do the oldest Martial Art documented, but also it is an art that has been characterized from the beginning by determination, simplicity, honesty, bravery, self-sacrifice, and loyalty.
Tae Kwon Do is a total learning activity. Lessons are tailored to a child's age and skill level. A child begins by practicing basic patterns and forms, board breaking, kicking combinations, blocking, striking, and punching. These fundamental skills increase the cihld's physical coordination, flexibility, balance, and mental acumen. Tae Kwon Do develops a child's athletic abilities and self-awareness, and improves the child's capabilities in self-defense.
Tae Kwon Do emphasizes mental development as well. Children learn respect for themselves and others, heightened concentration, and increased self-discipline and self-restraint.
The self-discipline that develops as a result of learning and practicing the techniques usually carries over into other areas of the child's life. School grades often improve as the child learns to focus on objectives and works towards achievement. The self-discipline and self-respect which Tae Kwon Do develops can provide a child with the skills and mind-set necessary to resist peer pressure.
Adult programs help the student develop and maintain a sound body and mind, and increase the adult's abilities in self-defense. Tae Kwon Do strengthens the adult body and improves health through physical exercise and conditioning. Isometric and dynamic tension exercises will promote strength gain and better muscle tone. A gradual building proess of safe and easy stretching techniques will enhance flexibility, while breathing and concentration exercises lead to sharper reflexes and senses.
The discipline of Tae Kwon Do leads to increased energy, better health and fitness, greater coordination, and higher self-esteem. These qualities are vital to a happier, longer life.
